Muay Thai is a combat sport that originated in Thailand and is known for its striking techniques that use the fists, elbows, knees, and shins. It is often referred to as “The Art of Eight Limbs” because of the eight points of contact used in the sport. Muay Thai is a physically demanding sport that requires a combination of strength, agility, and endurance. It has gained popularity worldwide as a martial art and a form of fitness training.
We train students of all levels and have a great atmosphere for learning at MAA. We also have a fantastic student:trainer ratio so that beginners are taken good care of and advance quickly.
Yes, Muay Thai can be an effective form of self-defense. Because Muay Thai emphasizes striking techniques with various parts of the body, it can help you develop powerful punches, kicks, knees, and elbows that can be used to defend yourself in a real-life situation. Additionally, Muay Thai training can help you build confidence, mental toughness, and situational awareness, which are all essential components of self-defense.
No, sparring is not mandatory at our gym. While we do offer sparring sessions every day as part of our Muay Thai training program, we understand that not everyone may be comfortable with or interested in sparring. If you do not wish to participate in sparring, nobody will force you to do so. However, we do encourage our students to try sparring as it is a valuable tool for improving technique. If you have any concerns or questions about sparring, please talk to your instructor.
The amount of time it takes to prepare for a Muay Thai fight can vary depending on the individual. Factors such as your level of dedication, natural ability, and experience with other combat sports can all play a role in how quickly you progress. However, as a general guideline, we recommend training for at least three months before stepping into the ring for your first fight. This gives you enough time to develop basic skills, build endurance and strength, and gain some practical experience through sparring and drills. Keep in mind that training for a fight requires a serious commitment, both in terms of time and effort, so be prepared to put in the work if you want to succeed.

If you’re traveling to Koh Phangan by air, the nearest airport is on Koh Samui Island. From there, you can take a taxi or minivan to either Bangrak Pier or Maenam Pier, both of which are just a short 5-10 minute drive from the airport. Once you arrive at the pier, you can take a ferry that will take you to Koh Phangan Island in approximately 20-30 minutes, with the ferry arriving at Thong Sala Pier. If you need help with the ferry timetable, feel free to contact us and we’ll be happy to assist you.
Another option is to fly to Surat Thani Airport, which is located on the mainland. From there, you’ll need to take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Donsak Pier, followed by a 2.5-hour ferry ride to Koh Phangan Island. This is generally a longer and more affordable way to reach the island. If you need assistance with ferry timetables, feel free to reach out to us and we’ll be happy to help.
